Sony Developing Spider-Man Spinoff Featuring Black Cat and Silver Sable
Marvel now co-owns the Spider-Man cinematic franchise, but Sony has free reigns to produce spin-offs without Marvel's involvement. They already have a release date in place for Venom, and THR reports that the studio has signed Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) to write a script spotlighting Black Cat and Silver Sable.
In addition to their colorful names, the women have in common a unique relationship with Spider-Man - antagonists with a twist, such as a romantic interest (Black Cat) and frequent ally (Silver Sable is not a villain but a mercenary with complicated ethics and a more complicated geopolitical worldview).
It's not stated outright whether this movie will exist in the same continuity as Spider-Man: Homecoming. The same is true of Venom. For these movies to work as tie-ins, they need to have some involvement in the movie that anchors the whole franchise; However, not having Marvel involved makes these movies look conspicuously like something other than spinoffs - like a Spider-Verse of it's own, existing outside the main film. An expanded universe in a separate, smaller, sandbox. It will be interesting to see how each these movies - Spider-Man: Homecoming, Venom, and the as-yet unnamed Black Cat/Silver Sable project, work, both as individual films and as a hopefully cohesive cinematic universe.
