Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Ego's Powers Explained
Kurt Russel appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is great news, though the fact that he's been cast as Ego, the Living Planet is surprising to comics fans who are associate the character with images like this one.
Guardians director James Gunn explained the powers, and appearance, of his version of Ego to Complex:
Ego is a living planet who is able to manifest himself in different ways he’s been alone for millions of years and he’s learned how to control the molecules around him in such a way as to create avatars of themselves, such as Kurt Russell. I think Ego was a very lonely character out there by himself and went off in search of love and perhaps found it in Quill’s mother.
That's a handy power set, and one that makes sense - a sentient planet, actually named Ego, would naturally want to manifest itself as a smooth guy. That's the same power set I aim for. And who's smoother than Kurt Russell?
