Scarif Don't Like It: The Origin of Rogue One Planet Name

Rogue One director Gareth Edwards revealed the origin of the name Scarif, a planet he introduced in the movie. It turns out, it had less to do with inspiration, than a coffee barista spelling his name incorrectly.

Speaking to Yahoo! Movies, Edwards describes getting inspiration from a misspelled coffee cup:

“I must have said, ‘It’s Gareth,’ and they wrote ‘Scarif,'”

He also discussed the reshoots, which, as I mentioned in a previous post, are very common and only seem to have benefited Rogue One. Reshoots tend to cause controversy, often unwarranted, mainly due to the fact that a few high-profile duds blamed their failures on reshoots and other tinkering.

Edwards is happy with his choices, too, telling Yahoo

“If it leads to the result where people don’t shout at you from across the street and say you ruined their childhood, I’ll take it.”
