'New Mutants' Trailer Is True to Comic's Teen Horror Roots
New Mutants director Josh Boone has already stated that the film will be a horror movie with drama, action, and angst - everything but spandex. That's certainly faithful to the early run of the comic series, particularly the specific period that the film is adapting, when Chris Claremont and artist Bill Sienkiewicz abruptly turned one of the first X-Men spinoffs into a unique, thrilling psychodrama (although in the comics, they did keep the spandex).
The first trailer delivers on the promise of a mutant horror movie, featuring Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga) interviewing young subjects questions that sound similar to the Voight-Kampff Empathy Test, and that clearly establish young mutants including a captive Danielle Moonstar (Blu Hunt) as potential dangers, to themselves and others. And so, the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters seems like a downright unpleasant, if not terrifying, place to matriculate.
Welcome to the New Mutants, as they say. Hope you survive the experience!
New Mutants is scheduled for release April 13, 2018.
